We only went inside because of Denkmal day, and I'm so glad we did. The place is wonderful, and “opulent” doesn't quite cover it. You don't have to be staying here to see some of it. There's a bar at one end, and from the main entrance, turning left takes you past many of the best bits on the way there. Eli was happy to have a big chair all to himself! Highly recommended.

We visited in July 2024, and the hotel seemed only about one-third full, even in the middle of summer. The morning buffet was great, and it's pet-friendly. The bar was nice in the evenings. It's a vintage hotel with air conditioning in the lobby, though the rooms could use a little refresh.

The location is exceptional and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are large and very clean. The spa has a small heated pool, a small jacuzzi and several types of sauna. The hotel feels old, and the carpets need renovation. The decor is a bit heavy. The sheets are old and not very smooth, and there's only one type of pillow, with no support. The keys themselves are small, but they're attached to very heavy key holders that are awkward to carry. Since reception closes at 10pm, you have to take them with you.

The exterior is striking, beautiful and clearly of historical importance, but the service was absolutely horrible across the board. It felt like the hotel was surviving on its history alone, without upkeep or service at a four- or five-star level. The “children’s room” was disgusting, and room-service trays were left out for more than 24 hours while housekeeping passed them throughout the day. Keep your expectations for quality and service lower than these reviews might lead you to believe.
