Berghotel Wilhelmsburg

The fresh, homemade food was a highlight, and we even took home a bottle of the house wine from reception. We also picked up eggs at the little “egg house” outside. Breakfast had plenty of everything, and the terrace overlooking the valley made mornings feel special. We had a lovely short break in Wilhelmsburg. This family-run mountain hotel really charmed us. The rooms are dated, but everything was clean and neat. We ate at the restaurant one evening, where both the meal and service were fantastic. The wine went down very well as a souvenir. We were made to feel welcome by the wonderfully friendly hosts, and the view from this family-run hotel above Bad Kösen is fantastic. Breakfast was great, and dinner at the restaurant was so good it made us want to stay awhile.

The room and bathroom were cramped, and the heat made the stay miserable. It was a stuffy 35°C (95°F), with no window screens, so grasshoppers, mosquitoes, flies and spiders got in quickly. Cobwebs clung to the window interiors and the bed's headboard. The floor was dirty, and the carpet had stains everywhere and was especially filthy around the edges. We booked a double room and a single. The hotel is very old, with only the sink and toilet seeming new. The beds, furniture and rest of the bathroom were old, too. There was a smell that brought East German times to mind. The landlady and her husband weren't friendly, perhaps because we weren't over 60. If you want a table on the terrace, reserve before your trip. Those tables are kept for close friends who are there, so we had to sit in the stuffy restaurant. We paid €480 for two nights, and we're still asking ourselves what justified that outrageous price. The restaurant has a small menu and high prices. A mini farmer's roulade with two mini dumplings cost €26. The pool looked dirty and unhygienic even from a distance, just a joke. We left after one night. Nobody seemed to care that we checked out early, as long as we'd paid for the whole vacation. A complete disaster.

They even charge €3 to store a bicycle, and everything felt overpriced. The single room was tiny, with an extremely small bathroom, and the whole place is quite dated. The friendliness felt strictly businesslike, with almost no interest in guests. At 7:45 p.m., restaurant staff repeatedly reminded us they closed at 8. I wouldn't recommend staying here. If the hosts had been warm and made guests feel appreciated, I could have overlooked a lot of these shortcomings.
