Am Sonnenbichl

We recently stayed overnight, and the beds and pillows were comfortable. It was very quiet at night with no traffic, though the walls are a bit thin. In October our ground-floor room felt too warm, even with the heaters off. It had a door and a small door-window that could be left tilted open for air, but that wasn't quite enough for me. The ground-floor rooms open onto a field, which is handy if you're traveling with a dog. Those rooms get plenty of sun and can heat up during the day; three other terrace rooms are mostly shaded. Breakfast had amazing bread. The selection isn't huge, but it's filling and you won't leave hungry. I like that this setup wastes much less food than a giant standard hotel buffet. Reception isn't staffed around the clock, but the hotel staff go out of their way to help. If you have a question, there's usually someone near the kitchen. I wrote a separate review for the restaurant because the food and service deserve one. We came all summer for the filet with truffle fries. We tried other dishes too, but that filet is so good we drive an hour just to have it.

The stay felt like a real reset, far from everyday worries, and was a great cultural experience. The scenery even surpassed what I'd pictured before coming from Australia. We'd wake up, look out from bed, and see the green rolling hills and the clear water of Tegernsee. It seems like a lovely stop on a walk or bike ride too, with good beer and food at the restaurant.

The old building has beautiful traditional interiors, and the views over the lake, mountains, and countryside are excellent. Our room was clean and comfortable, and the bathroom was spacious with everything we needed. The Wi-Fi wasn't great, but it was enough for email and general browsing.

The rooms have been newly renovated, with a modern feel while still being cozy. The food was delicious and the service was great, but what really made the difference was how friendly and welcoming the staff were.
