We came just for a meal, and both the service and food were top notch. They have a children’s menu, plus special plates and other accessories that made eating out a really nice experience for our four-year-old.

The rooms are clean, and I’d book one on the valley side with a balcony. There’s no room service, but the price reflects that, so it’s good value. Food is traditional southern German style. It’s a lovely family-run hotel and a perfect base for a few days of hill walking. We used to drive here, but last time we took the train, which worked well. It’s lovely any time of year, though for walking I’d recommend Easter or October. One thing to know if you’re unfamiliar with Germany: Tuesday is a rest day. Apart from breakfast and a very limited dinner, the restaurant is closed. You can book a table at the Tanne Hotel down the road that night.

A little old-fashioned, but that just adds to the charm. The meals and service were exactly what we needed after a long day on the road, and the place feels wonderfully quaint.
