Gasthof Und Hotel Maria Gern

A friend suggested this place, and we hadn't expected it to be so beautiful. It looks like it belongs on a postcard. From the moment we came through the door, we felt welcomed like family. The staff were exceptionally friendly, courteous, and helpful. The beds could use a little updating, as others have mentioned, but everything else was above and beyond. It's a quaint spot, and our family will definitely stay here again.

The views of Hochkalter and Watzmann are amazing, and they get even better if you climb to the top of the hill where the hotel sits. Just plan your trip back: the last bus from Berchtesgaden railway station leaves at about 17:10. After that, it's a 3.5km uphill walk or a taxi. You could also try RufBus, which is an on-demand bus for 3.50€.

The view is absolutely stunning, and the relaxed atmosphere helped me forget about work stress for a while. The church itself is very small, so a visit to see it and take pictures probably takes no more than 10 minutes. If you're not driving, check the bus schedule carefully. Buses don't come very frequently, and there's no service between Maria Gern and Berschgaten hbf from 11:30 am to 1pm. You can walk between Maria Gern and Berschgaten in about 40mins using the footpaths.

Dinner was simply fantastic, and breakfast was wonderful too. It may have been the best food I had during my recent two weeks in Germany. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable, and the hotel has the rustic charm you'd expect in this part of Germany. It's a quiet place with splendid views all around, and the hard-working staff are friendly and very helpful. I've visited the Berchtesgaden region for 40 years, and this has become my absolute favorite. I'm reluctant to share this hidden gem because I don't want crowds to spoil its tranquility and beauty.
