The pool is a real highlight, and so are the building’s character and convenient location. Staff were friendly throughout, breakfast coffee from the new Franke machines was surprisingly good, and I liked the soft towels, robes, slippers, vanity set, and unusual bathroom door. Sleep was uneven. The left mattress sagged badly and made my first night uncomfortable; I only noticed the other side was much firmer the next day, and slept better after switching. The pillows were too soft for me. With no air conditioning, I had to leave the windows open even though it wasn’t especially hot. A few practical details were frustrating: the kettle was tucked away, so I bought tea on my first day, and the vending setup meant going back and forth because its app wouldn’t take UK numbers and the coffee machine needed coins. For a four-star hotel, I’d expect coffee in the room. Breakfast was fine but uninspiring for the price, especially with fresh juice costing extra. A handprint on a corridor glass door stayed there for three days, and the hairdryer looked decades old. Stylish and well placed, but some comfort and upkeep details fell short.

I’m a local swimmer, not a hotel guest. The pool is lovely and small, with a steady depth. It’s a nice place to unwind in the historic surroundings, though not for intensive training. The changing area is much too narrow and awkward, and I hope they expand it someday.

There’s plenty of room, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The pool and sauna are beautiful, too. The place has loads of history and charm, and its maze-like layout is fun rather than annoying. Lots of good shops are within walking distance. A great place to stay, relax, and enjoy yourself.

We had no hot water for three days during the winter holidays, and the hotel never told us about it. When we asked, staff kept giving us the runaround before suggesting we use public showers. There was no offer of a discount or refund, even though hot water in the room is a basic expectation. Staff were unhelpful and dishonest about what was going on. At their request, we packed everything to move rooms, only to be told after we’d packed that the problem affected the whole hotel. When we asked why guests hadn’t been informed, the desk clerk said, “it’s not my responsibility to call every single room.” Stay away. Believe the poor reviews.
