Hotel Doctor Weinstube

The dark wood and antique touches made for a nice interior, but at this price I'd eat somewhere else in Bernkastel-Kues. I travel widely around Europe and know what I expect from a good restaurant, and this wasn't it. I'm baffled by the 4.4-star rating. In a quaint, pretty town like this, I don't think this food is worth spending good money on. Maybe day-trip visitors who don't look closely won't notice the difference. That's my view, and you can decide for yourself. We had less than two hours for the whole dinner, including looking at the menu, choosing, ordering, waiting, eating, and dessert. The dishes felt overrated for what we got. The tomato-coconut soup with king prawns and the sauce with the mushroom dumplings were both a bit too salty. We wanted to see how they handled pork medallions, since getting the meat right can be tricky. What arrived was thick, fibrous, and so tough it was hard to cut. About a quarter of it was left uneaten. The service was professional, but not attentive enough to ask about the untouched portion. We wouldn't have wanted another medallion even if they'd offered to replace it. It was a depressing experience, and the attached photo of the meat says it all.
