The cottages are quiet and rustic, right in a beautiful woodland setting. If spiders or other insects bother you, be prepared. A small kitchen would make the cottages even better, since there's room for one. It's a lovely area, especially if you enjoy nature.

The natural beauty around the hotel is what made it our favorite place on our trip to Germany. It's in a beautiful, remote setting, and the rooms were large and clean. The staff were friendly and breakfast was excellent. It was a surprising stay, certainly not what we expected.

There isn't any good food in-house.

The lack of peace and quiet was a huge problem. We brought our dog because this place had been recommended as incredibly quiet, in a nature reserve where fireworks were prohibited. It was the opposite, louder than our home in the city, with the noise echoing through the forest. We didn't get any rest, and it wasn't a vacation at all. The owner immediately threatened to call the police when we politely raised our concerns. Completely unacceptable. Never again. This was an overpriced disappointment, and Hotel Spöktal doesn't deserve to be called a hotel. In the wooden cabins there wasn't even a mug for tea, a glass for water or brushing teeth, soap, clothes shelves, or a mirror in the hall or room. Guests had to get their own food and clear their own dishes. The food you had to bring in was far too expensive for the small selection, especially the New Year's Eve buffet. Meatballs and croquettes that ran out almost immediately were hardly suitable for New Year's Eve. Breakfast was very unhygienic. Spoons were stuck into glasses with no bowls, and cheese and sausage were thrown onto plates. When items ran out, many weren't replaced. There was nobody to ask, so guests had to go to the kitchen themselves even for a spoon. The main building was old, and guests were expected to bring their own food and eat somewhere with their dog. There were no placemats or blankets. On New Year's morning, dirty dishes were still scattered around where we wanted to eat. Breakfast didn't start until 9:00 AM instead of 8:30 AM, and reception was rarely staffed, with no information about the change.
