Zum weißen Mönch

The surroundings deserve full marks, but I really disliked the restaurant. We came for coffee and cake and were seated ahead of everyone else. The waitress saw us, walked straight past, and served another table instead. It felt like they only wanted to serve older people.

We felt right at home in the modern, comfortable, spotless accommodation during our New Year’s Eve stay. The dinner staff were excellent, friendly, and very attentive, and we enjoyed the magician’s performance. A larger TV would have been nice, though, and the main course portions need work. At that high price, two bread dumplings per person just wasn’t enough. Thanks for the hospitality, and all the best to the hotel.

The monastery is lovely, but we won’t be going back to the White Monk. We stopped there for another piece of cake after visiting, and on that Sunday afternoon cheesecake was the only choice. It didn’t look homemade, either. If cheesecake wasn’t to your taste, the alternative was Vienna sausages. Service left a lot to be desired as well.

The calm, beautiful setting more than makes up for the simply furnished rooms. I’ve been here several times since 2010 for early music courses at Michaelstein Monastery, most recently in 2020 and 2025. The courses include full board for about 40 people at fixed times. Compared with 2020, both the friendliness and service have improved a lot, and so has the general standard of the food. Everyone who had stayed here before noticed the difference. Coffee and cake in the garden, separate from the group meals, were tasty and fairly priced. When I left a small item behind, it was sent to me quickly and at no charge. Thanks, and keep it up!
