Victoria's location is terrific, though Boltenhagen is small enough that just about anywhere is well placed. Don't let them tell you the location alone explains the price. We paid €731 for five nights in a 22-square-meter apartment, the most expensive rental we've ever had, and they didn't even provide toilet paper. My husband has booked vacation apartments around Europe for 28 years, and we've mostly chosen apartments over hotels for the more than six years we've been together. We travel 6-10 times a year. I'll never use Boltenhagener Apartment und Immobilien Service gmbh again. They seem to run many rentals in this idyllic town, which I'd like to visit again, so I'll be careful to avoid places managed by them. We saw larger rentals advertised around town with full kitchens for much less. We compared peak season with peak season, not Victoria's peak rates with other places' low-season prices, as the woman my husband complained to insultingly suggested. The apartment itself was cramped and poorly thought out. There were tables without drawers and so many unattractive decorations that there was almost nowhere to put our belongings. The person who furnished it seemed to have rushed through the job. There wasn't even a kitchen light. The beds were incredibly soft, like the cheapest ones a furniture store could sell, and seemed suitable only for a child's weight. Noise traveled easily from the other apartments, with no apparent insulation. On arrival, the bedroom curtain was missing from the window. Its plastic rod holder was broken, and both the rod and curtain had been shoved into the closet. Mold covered the bathroom window. We then noticed spiderwebs everywhere, in corners and around the furniture and lights. The bedroom smoke alarm was missing, there was a large oil stain beside the stove, and food splatters covered a wooden beam near the counter. I wiped those splatters away easily with a damp cloth. The glass in the door between the bedroom and kitchen looked as though it had never been cleaned. All the utensils, cups, and glasses were dirty, so we had to wash every one before using it. My husband finally got an email through to the property company at the end of our third day. The next morning they called to say someone would come clean later that day. Because of the bad weather, we had planned to stay in and relax, but instead we tidied our things, put valuables in the car, and walked through heavy rain for six hours, expecting to return to a clean apartment. Nobody had come, and there was no explanation. We lost our one day to rest. We've rented a lot of vacation apartments, and this was the first that didn't provide toilet paper. We won't book with this company again.

We come back every year for a short late-summer break. The house is beautifully maintained, and the apartments are fully equipped and thoughtfully laid out, with lovely terraces and balconies. There are no hotel complexes next door, just historic beach houses surrounded by big gardens. From the large garden, you can walk straight to the beach. A dream, six stars!

The country house is in an unbeatable spot, and the service was excellent, competent, and very friendly. The apartment is furnished with care and feels comfortable, just right for a relaxing holiday. I'll be back!

BAIS, the landlord of the “Viktoria” country house, had consistently friendly and capable staff, which is why I gave one star. The owner's decision to fit seven apartments into this small, cramped old house feels driven by dollar signs. There was room for perhaps three spacious units. Even with “Viktoria” in such a hard-to-beat location, the value for money is extremely poor, and the location itself isn't the landlord's achievement. Our bathroom was a disaster. The shower curtain was unappealing, and the space was so tight that anyone over 85 kilos would struggle. We booked two bedrooms, but one opened directly onto the spiral stairs to the upper floor, with no door. For that reason alone, you shouldn't use the wood-burning stove downstairs, given the carbon monoxide risk. The other “bedroom” felt more like a shack. The listed floor area is misleading because much of the roof space is taken up by sloping ceilings that aren't usable. The huge table for six dominated the furnishings, making the apartment a nightmare even for four people. The kitchen had enough equipment, but there was nothing for children to do, not even a card game. The scant “library” seemed to be things previous guests had left behind. My husband and I have been coming to Boltenhagen for at least 12 years, usually staying at the “Likedeeler.” It was unavailable for our lovely week in September, so we booked there again for June 2024. Never again at the “Viktoria.”

We never planned to visit Boltenhagen, but this country house won us over right away. It's cozy and authentic, with everything we needed. The pine scent brought back childhood memories, and the sea is only a few steps away. Don't miss the starry sky at night. BAIS provided fantastic service too. We'd never had a landlord drive us to the property, collect the keys afterward, and give us a quick update in person. It's a pity the apartments aren't for sale.
