The children loved the hands-on museum, where they could spin, write with a quill, and use a hammer and chisel on stones like people did in the old days. The volunteers welcomed us warmly and answered all the kids’ questions. There’s plenty to see and learn, and adults are the only ones who pay admission. A puzzle makes the 106-step climb up the basilica tower fun for children, though it isn’t wheelchair accessible. We also got to visit the Baroque St. Michael's Church on the castle hill with "Monk Torsten." Its barrel vault is painted in a marbled style with the sun, moon, stars, and lots of clouds. The two-story wooden galleries have white and blue parapets painted with biblical sayings and symbols of Baroque piety. Everyone had a great time. Definitely worth a visit.

As a family, we felt the event was a waste of money. The entrance fee was already expensive, and the stalls cost even more. Children’s entertainment was a complete rip-off, while food prices matched those in a major city. The medieval market felt like a huge commercial operation, and the program seemed designed only to draw people in. It appeared that nobody really had a plan.

The basilica is open to visitors Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 am to 5 pm, and you can also go up the tower. There’s an interesting museum, too. Admission is €3 per person. The castle has a castle.

A lovely town right on the banks of the Werra River, with a beautiful historic spot that has a real medieval feel. It’s a gem and a peaceful break from big-city noise.

We came for the medieval market and had a fantastic time. It was quite a spectacle and well worth the entrance fee.
