The first day, we noticed some basics were missing, like sugar, salt, pepper and dish soap, so it’s best to bring what you need. The bathroom is up two steps, and the shower opening is very narrow, with no walk-in shower. That wasn’t a problem for us, though, so everything was fine. We rented a cozy and quite spacious apartment in a beautiful, old, well-preserved half-timbered house. It had everything else we needed.

We had a long Pentecost weekend in Briedel and booked the Old Winery studio. The house is centrally located in a charming alley and is nicely designed. The studio was clean and tidy, and we slept wonderfully on the comfortable mattresses. The hot water in the shower was either icy or scalding, though, and the toilet brush has seen better days. The seating in the middle of the room takes up too much space and makes it hard to move around. Rearranging the furniture could make a big difference, and a larger room would suit us better. Saturday night was unbearably loud, with other guests shouting and banging around as if they were alone in the house. That wasn’t the host’s fault. If the hot water were better regulated, we might come back.

We really liked the attic apartment in the half-timbered Old Winery. It’s cozy, beautifully done, has a glass roof and is very well equipped. Briedel itself is a small, quiet village that’s lovely for walks along the Moselle. The river is only a few metres away, with a playground and a Kneipp water-treading basin a short walk further on. There are restaurants in the village and, of course, good wine. Zell is just a few kilometres away, and Traben-Trarbach and Cochem are close too.

The space was large, but the ceilings were low. It smelled closed up whenever we came in, and we had to wash the bags and plates again. The walls were thin and the ceiling was wooden, so we could hear everything from the other apartments.

When we arrived, nobody was there to let us into the rooms, and no one answered the phone. We had to find another hotel.
