There are some useful things about this place: it’s close to the town’s shops, has daily housekeeping, three free parking spaces, a laundry machine and unlimited free Wi-Fi. If you ask, they may be able to provide turkey or chicken at breakfast, or still, tasteless water. Scrambled eggs seem to depend on luck. The owners were reliable, reasonable and helpful when needed, though most of the other staff weren’t very friendly. Breakfast doesn’t include hot food unless you ask, and there’s no dryer, so getting laundry dry can be difficult in Bückeburg’s weather. The room also had no toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo or body gel, and there wasn’t an English information booklet, just a “do not disturb” sign. The main problem was what happened with my room. If you tell reception you’ll be away overnight, they may rent it to someone else. They can move your belongings, including money, passport and laptop, to a locked safe place and assure you they’ve kept them secure. They don’t charge you for the night they rent the room out, but that arrangement was still alarming. After I returned from a trip in the morning, I found a note on my door with a brochure for the Kroonprinz hotel, an average three-star place, suggesting I sleep there instead of waking the person snoring in the room I’d booked and paid for. Things can go wrong, but this felt like the booking staff hadn’t thought it through. The location on the town’s main street can also be noisy. On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays or national holidays, you may be woken by people shouting and laughing. During the 2014 World Cup, when they were champions, the celebrations were especially loud. It’s a cozy enough place for a short stay, but if you need somewhere for longer, I’d look at other options. If you want an adventure, though, here it is.
