Messehotel Köln-Deutz

The staff were friendly, and the place was very quiet, away from busy streets. The room wasn't great, though. The shower felt dated and smelled bad, and breakfast was overpriced.

The one bright spot was the receptionist, who was polite and nice. The room was a huge letdown: the smallest room and beds I've come across in Germany, with crumbs all over the carpet and dirt under the sink. We booked for two adults and two kids but were given two separate bedrooms. With small children, they won't fit in the room, and if you want to sleep beside your spouse, only one small person will fit in the bed, especially with those XS beds. I asked about larger beds and was told there weren't any.

The one thing in its favor was the location, about 15 min by foot from the convention and train station. For everything else we dealt with, the stay was extremely overpriced. I travel a lot and have never seen anything like it. Breakfast wasn't included either, and they wanted another 20€, which felt like another rip-off. The room was tiny, and the cleaning was disgusting. On our first day they didn't clean the floor at all or replace the toilet paper. I also wondered if the sheets had been changed, since I found my hair under the pillow. After I complained they cleaned, but left the dirty spot behind the door. When we came back, the room had been left open and the bathroom light was on. They never brought another disposable hygiene pack with cotton pads and swabs, so apparently there was just one for the whole stay. There were no other disposable items either. No phone in the room made it very hard to reach reception. There was no AC or fridge, and the shower drain left the whole floor wet. The automatic tap came on with any little movement, even though there was a water-saving sticker above the sink. It was extremely inconvenient and made no sense to me. The in-room safe had been cut open with a metal cutter and was completely unusable. I'll leave that without comment. Right at the end of our stay, the elevator broke. We asked if anyone could help with our very heavy luggage and were told, “no sorry there is nothing we can can do, it’s just us here”.

For a short city break, this is a nice hotel, with fairly spacious rooms. The U-bahn is conveniently placed for reaching the main attractions. Internet can get a little slow at certain times in the evening.
