We only stayed because of a flat tire and tried to make the best of it, hoping for a nice meal at a country hotel and a decent night's rest. Instead, the room called a “garden view” faced the street, and opening the window let in all the traffic noise. The place smelled strongly of mold, had no air conditioning or refrigerator, and the fan was useless. The TV remote didn't work either. At €190 in summer, that's outrageous. It's not really a hotel, either, since there's no restaurant. We arrived 30 minutes after booking and were left waiting for someone to open the door. Breakfast costs €25 per person, but they didn't seem keen to offer it and pointed us toward a bakery in town. One problem seemed to lead to another.

The bed was divine, the rooms spacious and comfortable, and breakfast fresh and healthy. Frau Schwarz welcomed us warmly after our 100km ride from Cologne. Landhotel Alte Töpferei appeared among the meadows beyond Duisburg like a mirage, and from the first moment it felt like a place that understands tired travelers. The decor is stylish and carefully put together, with personal attention throughout. Frau Schwarz says anyone who can add two and two can open a lovely hotel, but that hardly captures what she's created. It's a small wonder to find somewhere so modern, welcoming, and charming in a tourism industry so driven by money.
