Hotel Glockenhof Eisenach

For the price, I think you can find somewhere better. It's not a bad little hotel, but there's a lot to fix in the rooms, and it didn't feel like a 4-star place. The room was clean but had only old furniture. The owner was helpful, though it didn't feel like enough. We booked for four and found just three beds, which left me unhappy. It was a really warm day, and there was no fridge for keeping water cold.

The breakfast was the one real bright spot. It was perfectly acceptable, and the chef deserves credit for eggs that peeled easily without overcooked yolks. The rest of our stay was frustrating. There was no AC or even a basic fan, so we had to open the windows to keep the room comfortable. The loud, often drunk customers at the strange Caribbean restaurant and cocktail bar below our bedroom windows kept disturbing us until midnight. Closing the windows cut some of the noise, but then the room got stuffy. The rooms felt dated and basic, with a very 70s/80s look and nothing modern. The TV was a small old one, like a computer monitor, and had no international channels. Friends staying at other Eisenach hotels for the wedding showed us photos of places that looked nicer and more modern, and said noise hadn't been a problem for them. In short, I can't recommend this hotel.

The room was huge, the bathroom very clean, and the traditional radiators worked perfectly. I much prefer those to modern air conditioning, and it was nice that the windows opened. A kettle was the one thing missing. At breakfast I didn't see toast, but the rest of the selection was huge, with fruit, cereals, honey, orange juice and more. The building has a very old style and architecture. The reception feels welcoming, with lots of information and things to look at. The receptionist spoke English and was very friendly.

The room was very clean and had all the amenities I needed. One strange thing was having to use the room key to lock and unlock the door from inside, then leave it in the holder by the door for the lights and electricity to work. I'd have preferred a proper deadbolt or latch, since that setup could be a problem if you needed to get out quickly in an emergency. The location is convenient for downtown, the marketplace, and the train station, and the city park is almost across the street for a quiet stroll. The room cost a little more than I wanted to pay, and the restaurant prices felt too high for what you get.
