Gasthaus Zur Sonne

For the quality we got, it felt quite expensive. The breakfast was just the bare minimum, and although the rooms were clean, the bed covers were made of a very sweaty, itchy material, maybe nylon. My son’s bed broke in the middle of the night. It had already been repaired before and seemed weakened.

On our third trip through Italy, we stayed at Gasthaus Zur Sonne again. We were welcomed warmly, had a nice dinner, and slept well. Breakfast was a lovely way to start the day. Thanks again for your hospitality, and we hope to see you next year. Kind regards, John & Anna

The biggest drawback for me was how far Gasthaus Zur Sonne is from the town center. If you want to stay out very late, it may not suit you. I was fine being back in bed by 12:30 A.M. The last #1 tram leaves Freiburg center from the Hauptbahnhof stop at 11:30, leaving time to reach Landwasser, the end of the line, and catch the waiting #36 bus to Dorfplatz, where the gasthaus is. That ride is under 10 minutes and four stops. The distance and patchy WIFI were outweighed, for me, by the hospitality, food, and reasonable price. I gave it four stars, though I would have made that 4.5 if I could. Bernd and Katrin were friendly, gracious, and accommodating. Their English isn’t perfect, but it’s enough for basic conversation, and it’s much better than my German. I visited during the peak of the 2018 summer heat wave, and they put a fan in my room without me asking. They also kindly ordered a taxi when I needed one. A bonus I didn’t expect was laundry service. Katrin did my washing for two weeks for 14 Euros. Prices might vary, but that’s roughly what it cost. My room was cleaned daily and had a private bathroom, a small refrigerator, a wide, comfortable bed, an armoire, a TV I never used, and free wifi. The wifi was sporadic, though good enough for me, so consider that if you need a steady connection. Dinner had a good variety, and Bernd is a fine chef while Katrin waits on tables. Breakfast was continental, with a wide selection of cold cuts, cheeses, juice, cereal, and boiled eggs. The coffee was excellent. I had a nice stay here.

Dinner was delicious, and the room was very comfortable. The owners were friendly.
