Hotel Restaurant Maier

Mr. Leobilla, our waiter, was great, and the female waitress was good too. The receptionists were friendly as well. The room itself was extremely dated, though I was glad it had air conditioning. The walls are very thin, and I could hear the TV in another room at 5am. We also hadn’t been told in advance that the steam room needed to be booked. When my partner went there, it was off.

Dinner was a real highlight for those without intolerances. The menu creatively showcases regional ingredients, including local watermelon, and the skilled team serves it with flair in an atmospheric dining room. There’s a drinks list for every mood. The wellness area was another strong point, airy, bright, and well maintained. The sauna and steam room fit 2-3 people before they start to feel crowded. The bike parking is thoughtfully set up too, with passive supervision, weather protection, and maintenance tools. The rooms were a letdown, though. Curtains too small for the windows let in light all night, the shower turned cold when someone in a neighboring room showered, and the TV wasn’t connected to any channels. Most concerning, no food was available for the gluten intolerance we’d reported in the pre-checkin questionnaire. That information reached reception but apparently not the restaurant. Breakfast was excellent quality, but frustratingly slow since everything is made to order. We waited half an hour for coffee, and the platter style portions led to a lot of food waste. We booked several rooms in both the Hofhaus and Stammhaus, so saw more of the hotel than most. It looks great, and the team is personable and proactive, but it fell short in some basic ways. Hotel Maier was fit for a one-night stopover.

The rooms are large, cozy, renovated, and tidy. The spa has both wet and dry saunas, parking is free, and the price to value is very good. WiFi was pretty unstable, and the soundproofing is poor.

The rooms are nice and spacious. Breakfast was mediocre at best, though certainly not bad.
