PLAZA Hotel Gelsenkirchen

The location made it easy to explore Gelsenkirchen, and the staff were friendly, attentive, and happy to help. My room was spacious, clean, and thoughtfully laid out, with everything I needed to relax. I had a delightful stay at Hotel Plaza and would happily book it again on my next trip. I highly recommend it for a comfortable visit.

The rooms had been freshly renovated, the breakfast was good, and the hotel is close to the tram and train station. But the air conditioning was out throughout the hotel, and nobody told us. Our room was 83 degrees for two days. They didn’t offer any discount, not even on breakfast, which brought down my rating.

The restaurant food and service were pretty good, and I was lucky enough to get a room on a finished floor. Some of the other floors I saw didn’t look great. The hotel seems to be getting updated, but they appear to be trying to stay open during extensive renovations without managing it well. At 5AM, they had a kitchen fire. The front desk worker said it was the second one in two weeks. We were all kept outside for nearly an hour while the fire department came, but nobody was called in to get the elevators running again. Walking back up to the 10th floor was not fun. They offered nothing to make up for the disruption. The next day we smelled burning bacon, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another fire. Check-in and check-out both came with a rude staff member. The hotel advertised AC, but there wasn’t any and the rate wasn’t adjusted. The fans they provided instead of air conditioning were broken. This place could be nice, but it seems terribly managed.

I only stayed one night and left early, so I can’t comment on the food or anything else. The staff were super friendly, and the view was really nice. The rooms are very old, though. It feels like what a premium hotel might have been 30 years ago. There’s also a very pretty park beside the hotel.
