The apartment is charmingly furnished and has everything we needed. It’s on the edge of Gerolstein, with a big forest nearby for walks. We booked at fairly short notice, and the hosts got in touch quickly and were exceptionally friendly. Bringing our little dog was no problem. There’s a hotel close by, and sometimes guests stand outside the door smoking at night. When they’re not there, it’s wonderfully quiet.

The apartment is packed with useful things, including towels, tea towels, two coffee makers, a kettle, pots, dishes, bowls, a hairdryer, soap, books, magazines, tourist information, maps, spices, and tea. Though the basic structure feels dated, clever little touches, like stickers and accessories on the 1980s tiles, freshen it up. The landlord was friendly and easy to deal with, and welcomed us with Gerolsteiner mineral water and a bottle of wine. I’m taking off a star for the location and noise. Groups of young people from the neighboring youth hostel woke me at 2 a.m. and again at 3 a.m., which wasn’t pleasant. The ventilation in the shower and toilet also runs almost constantly, and you can hear it faintly throughout the apartment.
