Schloss Gerzen

The service really went beyond what I expected, and the team made the stay unforgettable. The rooms were spotless and even better than they looked in the pictures. Best hotel stay of the year, and many thanks to everyone there!

Even though the restaurant was closed during Covid, which wasn't really the hotel's fault, eating out in the small village of Gerzen wasn't easy. I also couldn't find a shared spot to sit in the evening with a book or a bottle of wine. Some of the huge rooms had an extra room before the bedroom, though, so there was more space in those. The hotel itself is a little castle in the center of town, set inside larger castle grounds surrounded by a wall. That setting makes it and the rooms very quiet. All 10 rooms are upstairs, and they're enormous by castle standards. Each has its own look, in keeping with the historic building, and the furnishings seemed new and recently renovated. Some rooms had kitchenettes, while others had a bedroom and separate living room. Breakfast downstairs was very good, with plenty to choose from.

That Kürbis Creme Suppe was a bright spot, delicious and seasonal. The rest of our September meal with friends was a letdown. Three of the six ordered pizza, and it came burnt and tasteless. My caprese salad had no flavor and didn't seem fresh. Service was fine, but the menu had changed, and perhaps the kitchen staff had too. They no longer serve traditional Bavarian food, and the kitchen seemed to struggle with Italian dishes. We'd enjoyed the meal, the atmosphere, and a lovely Schloss tour when we visited in January. We've been to Schloss Gerzen over the years while visiting friends nearby, and this September we came back hoping to share that same experience. I can't recommend the restaurant at Schloss Gerzen right now, but I hope things change and will give it another try on my next visit to Germany.

The service was very good, and the food was excellent. A beautiful place.
