The quiet street, generous parking, and large house made for a relaxing two weeks in September 2022. The kitchen was functional and seemed in line with what you’d expect of a five-star luxury property. But the DTV five-star rating dates from 2018 and was only valid for three years, and the house’s condition didn’t match that standard. The DTV criteria say the rooms and equipment should be very high quality and luxurious, and look as good as new without visible wear. There were quite a few things needing attention. Some doors dragged on the floor, though the caretaker promptly fixed them with washers after I reported it. The dining table wobbled because its screws were loose, and the caretaker fixed that too. The ground-floor shower only trickled, which the caretaker documented. I wondered why I had to report these issues rather than the cleaning crew noticing them. The paintwork was worn, there was a thumb-sized dent in the entrance, the walls badly needed repainting, and chipped plates and glasses should have been replaced. We also had to vacuum thoroughly when we arrived. We called on Monday to complain about the defects and cleanliness, but no one accepted our invitation to come see the problems. That was a shame, since seeing them firsthand would have made a real impression. Instead, they offered to send the cleaners back. We politely declined because we’d already vacuumed, then eventually agreed on an amount that would let us treat the women to dinner. For anyone from GSA reading this, why is there only a mini bottle of dish soap in the house? The German Tourism Association says guests should always have basic cleaning supplies like a broom, bucket, mop, cloths, or sponge. Toilet cleaner is inexpensive and should be standard in a luxury house. The exterior also had numerous cobwebs, which should be cleared away. They’re the first thing you notice. I’d recommend having a painting crew restore the house’s former glory. We did have a lovely, relaxing time, but it wasn’t the five-star luxury holiday we’d hoped for. We’ll be back, though, since the destination is certainly worth a visit.
