We found the room and bathroom clean and tidy, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is right in Goslar's old centre, though getting into the building takes a little figuring out: the hotel entrance is beside the church, not through the large black door that seems to have been the original entrance. When we arrived, the hotel door was locked and reception was empty. A sign beside it directed us to check in at another hotel about 200 metres down the road. That was fine for us, but could be awkward with lots of luggage. The lift is small and has a heavy door. Our bags were light, so it wasn't a problem. We did hear squeaky floorboards and the church bell in the morning, but that's part of staying in an old building in the historic centre. Parking behind the hotel is available for a fee and, as I understood it, needs to be reserved. We used public parking instead, which was free on Saturdays after 18:00 and on Sundays. I'd happily recommend the hotel.

The place was clean, but expensive. The reception and restaurant are in separate locations.

A charming old hotel, renovated nicely.

A place you really should see in this beautiful city.

The Brusttuch is one of Goslar's striking townhouses, alongside its impressive guildhalls. It was built between 1521 and 1526 as a three-storey home for the Goslar patrician Johannes Thiling. The half-timbered corner house has a trapezoidal plan, with so few right angles that its carpenters needed real skill, especially for the roof. There are many carvings on the beams beneath it: figures from the Roman pantheon, alchemy and astrology symbols, and bawdy scenes. On the upper floor, the woodcarver filled the timber framing with a detailed set of images, including colourful figures from classical mythology. Some of the animals and scenes are hard to interpret today, and drift into mythical territory, at times with a morally questionable edge. The best-known carving may be the "Butterhanne" (Butter Hanne), which has become something of a Goslar symbol. Depending on the legend, it shows a maid in wooden shoes churning butter or cream with one hand while lifting her skirt with the other. Her bare bottom is turned toward the devil on a nearby cleat, as if to show she doesn't need his magic. For more details, see the blog "City Tours with lialo: Goslar Up Close."
