Arcadia Hotel Sonnenhof Grafenau

The food was really good, and we found the modern, well-maintained hotel pleasant, with clean rooms, nice service, and a good atmosphere. I came for the weekend with my four-year-old son, whose mother is at a mother-and-child health retreat there. He stayed overnight with me at the Hotel Sonnenhof Grafenau. When I called to book and explained our situation, the gentleman was very friendly and offered us a special discount. I'd like to thank him again. We were disappointed to learn only when we arrived that the children's pool is open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Swimming is a big highlight for a four-year-old, and no one mentioned the restricted hours when I booked or at check-in. Knowing in advance would have helped us plan. I hope this comes across as constructive feedback.

The staff were helpful and friendly, and the spa area was great. There could be a few more loungers, especially for a hotel built for this many guests. Breakfast had a good selection, and our room and bathroom were clean. The room itself was nice, but the ventilation didn't work properly, so it got very warm after showers and we had to leave the window open the whole time. The recent renovation is visible, but not always in a good way: wires are exposed from the walls, and the hallway carpets were dirty. The buffet dinner was a real drawback for us. The starters were okay, but the rest felt like a cafeteria, which isn't what I expect at a 4-star hotel. The hotel is good, but it was missing that extra touch and feeling of being fully pampered.

The staff were so kind and attentive throughout our wellness stay from February 1st to 5th. We'll definitely come back to enjoy the wellness and relaxation options again. The outdoor pool area looked beautiful, but unfortunately it was closed at that time of year. We loved the rooms and spa area, including the inviting places to relax, and both the breakfast and dinner areas were beautifully set up. The breakfast buffet was carefully presented and had something for everyone. Dinner had been planned as a buffet but was served as a three-course meal instead, with choices to suit every palate. The food was excellent, and we had three relaxing nights at the hotel. The spa and sauna were lovely and clean. The hotel reopened in December, so you can still see that in a few places, but it didn't bother us. I was sorry the bubbling steam room wasn't working, since I'd have liked to try it. :) I'd definitely recommend staying here.
