Gut Grubnow Rügen

We were impressed by how quiet and lovely the setting is. The path leading up to the manor is idyllic, and for that part we'd give it five stars. The stay itself, though, left us with a poor impression, and at €160 a night we expected much more. We won't be coming back. We rented apartment 4 from September 30th to October 11th, 2025. On arrival, a staff member told us by phone where to find it and said the key was in the lock. We expected someone to show us around, but the same woman probably drove away soon after. The entrance looked neglected, with insect droppings on the front door and old cobwebs across the nearby windows. We didn't feel welcome. Apartment 4 had much the same problem: cobwebs throughout, dirty windows and patio door, and an unclean patio with an ashtray full of cigarette ends on the sill. Schnee Flocke had posted a three-star review with photos of the apartment's condition a year earlier, and we saw no improvement. After we called and met with someone in person, they cleaned the windows and removed the worst cobwebs in the living room and elsewhere. But over the week, we found plenty more to complain about. The furniture, mostly Ikea, is dated and seems due for replacement. The sofas and beds were uncomfortable, and the 1.40m-wide bed felt too narrow for a place at these prices. The old, cheap sheets and blankets didn't help. The bathroom was in especially bad shape. The shower cubicle was filthy and rotten along the bottom, which was disgusting, and the shower head over the bathtub was broken. The living room parquet was badly worn and stained, and really needs refinishing. The sauna needs attention too. It took us two hours to reach 85 degrees Celsius with the setting at 120, although we're told it should heat up in half an hour. There's no proper way to pour water on the stones, so we used a saucepan and ladle. The controls and heater should be checked. The loungers in the relaxation room were so uncomfortable that an old folding chair would be better, and they were hard to lie on and get up from. We have two saunas ourselves and know there are better options. Booking information should also say to bring sauna towels, bathrobes, and blankets. There wasn't even salt, pepper, or sugar in the apartment. The entrance also needs better lighting, since it was completely dark from the parking lot when we arrived late. The common room was a nice touch and we used it once. We liked the fireplace too, but its air supply couldn't be adjusted, so the logs seemed to shoot up the chimney. We were surprised that firewood cost extra and had to bring our own.

The scenery was fantastic, and both the house and rooms were great. We stayed at Gut Grubnow for a few days last year with our child and dog. Sure, there were a few things to raise, but the team sorted them out quickly and without fuss, and apologized for the inconvenience. Full marks for handling that so well. The mosquitoes were a nuisance, as always, but we'd happily return. Highly recommended!

The apartments could use some basic cooking supplies. There was no salt, oil, or anything along those lines, which I've found even in much cheaper places. Maybe that's something to consider. The property is lovely, stylishly furnished, spacious, and could have been very peaceful. But a dachshund was left roaming around and barking constantly, which really spoiled our short break. It was poorly trained, didn't listen, and even came into our apartment once. The owner brought it back when we asked, but I don't think a dog that disruptive should be loose in a hotel. Some guests have allergies or are afraid of dogs, and others simply don't want one around. Having to keep going back to the owner so it wouldn't bark at us wasn't what we wanted on vacation.

Gut Grubnow has become a special place for us, somewhere we felt safe and happy, sheltered by the house and inspired by the beautiful nature around it. We came across some reviews on our way back, and they made me stop and think. Everything gets rated these days. Reviews can help, but it bothers me how negative comments in particular can stay in our shared memory and leave a mark. We return feeling grateful, and hope to see Gut Grubnow again soon.
