The elevator problems made getting around especially difficult. When we returned Friday evening, both lifts were out of order and our room was on the 7th floor, so we had to climb seven flights with luggage and winter gear. One lift was repaired later that night, but the other stayed out for the rest of our stay. With families visiting the Christmas markets, this was even more inconvenient at busy times. We also found an obscene, offensive decoration on a table by the decorative fireplace in the lobby on Sunday afternoon. It was still there when we came back later, just moved to another table. With so many families and young children staying there, that showed poor attention and oversight. There were service problems too. We arrived at 2:26 pm and were told our room wouldn’t be ready until exactly 3:00 pm. I understand check-in times, but it was hard to believe the room only became ready at that exact moment, especially while watching other guests check in. Paolo Gomes was professional, but very rigid, with no flexibility. It made the welcome feel cold for a city hotel serving international travellers. At 10 pm we called reception for a top sheet to use between the duvet and our bodies, as we prefer in Anglo households, and were told it would be brought up. Instead, a female night attendant arrived aggressively and said extra linen wasn’t allowed because the room was for two, even though there were two of us. She lectured us at the door about being busy, how lucky we were, and that she’d allow it this time but charge us for extra linen in future. It was a simple request reception had approved, yet we were made to feel unreasonable. I spent a weekend at the Adina Apartment Hotel Hamburg Michel and, after a lifetime in hospitality and cruise industries, found the service and guest experience very disappointing. The rigid welcome, confrontational exchange, broken lifts, and lack of care in the lobby left me unhappy with the stay. I wouldn’t return or recommend it.
