Hotel Stadt Kappeln

The location is really nice, and the staff were friendly.

Really clean and cozy.

The entrance, restaurant, and shared areas looked very appealing, and the staff were great and friendly at first. But that impression didn’t carry through to the rest of the hotel. We stayed one night, and there weren’t always enough spaces to park right by the building. The room was functional but already quite worn. It smelled awful when we arrived. We were told housekeeping hadn’t aired it out and that the previous guest was to blame, but leaving the windows open for ages made no difference. The smell was still extremely bad when we left. Cleaning also seemed rushed and superficial: dust everywhere, stains on the carpet and shower wall, and a broken shower tap. Dirty laundry carts were left in the hallway the whole time. We couldn’t get hot water for a shower around 8:30 pm, and the same thing happened at 7:00 am. That’s unacceptable, and it wasn’t because the shower was far away. The old wooden windows were poorly maintained and hard to open and close. At night, the room wasn’t dark because the TV standby light was huge and a display on the wall stayed lit. There was also a loud humming noise from somewhere in the hotel that could be heard continuously from the street. The breakfast buffet was generous and tasty. For a fairly high price, though, the hotel should get more attention to detail. The staff need enough time, money, and motivation to clean properly. They could standardize the energy-saving bulbs or switch to LEDs, and remove the adhesive residue from the switches. The staff seemed to lose their motivation once you got into the hotel itself.

The rooms are a little dated, though generally comfortable and adequate. The hotel is in a lovely spot, and the service is friendly. Breakfast wasn’t anything special, but it had what you need.
