I haven’t been inside the house yet, but I’ve known it since I was very young from walks in Kleve Tiergarten forest. Back when the Brockmeyer family of foresters lived there, you could see ponies or horses, and two of my siblings learned to ride on “Stubsy.” The house still has all its charm from the outside, and the photo gallery has made me appreciate the lovely interior too. From here it’s just a short walk through the woods to the Kupferner Knopf (Copper Button), Prince Moritz of Nassau’s gardens and amphitheater, the Kleve Tiergarten (Kleve Zoo), the forest garden, and the former spa building, now a museum. That was from when Kleve was still called Bad Cleve. 👍

My mother and I had a wonderful week at Haus Hirschphuhl. She booked the ground-floor apartment and I stayed in the attic one. Both were spotlessly clean, and the host family were friendly, relaxed, and helpful. The house sits right by the forest, so it’s very quiet and the air is wonderful. We loved the tasteful, high-quality furnishings in both apartments. “Reduce to the max” really says it all: everything we needed was there, nothing felt unnecessary, and it was a feast for the eyes. Even the coffee grounds and dishwasher tablets were provided. The ground-floor apartment has a small, very well-kept garden, and the first-floor and attic apartments also have lovely garden areas. The Lower Rhine region offers plenty of culture, scenery, and good food. We highly recommend Inselgasthof Nass in Rees. It’s rare to find fish that fresh, cooked so perfectly. We’ll be back.

Right in the heart of the city, yet quiet and on the edge of the forest. The rooms are superb, bright, and welcoming, and the furnishings are fantastic. Highly recommended!
