Steigenberger Icon Grandhotel & Spa Petersberg

I’ve been visiting since childhood, and the hotel has always felt mysterious, grand, and steeped in history. It still gives me a sense of occasion every time I return, and is probably the most interesting and luxurious hotel in the Bonn area. The views and the approach are breathtaking. Driving up the winding road, you see the hotel rise above the trees, with beautiful grounds overlooking the Rhine Valley. You definitely need a car, but that’s part of the charm. Schloss Drachenburg and the Heisterbach Abbey ruins (Klosterruine Heisterbach) are lovely nearby attractions and worth a visit. Inside, it feels like a vast, iconic time capsule, full of atmosphere, though a careful renovation could bring it closer to modern luxury standards. There are plenty of bars and restaurants, all reasonably priced for the setting. The scale of the property becomes clear as you move between wings and elevators. It feels almost like its own world. My room was enormous, easily 50 square meters excluding the bathroom, with ceilings around three meters high. The stone floors gave it grandeur but made it feel a little cold, so modern carpeting would make it cozier. The lighting was pleasant but traditional, and the furnishings felt sparse for such a large room. The sofa was small and firm, while the bed was comfortable. The pillow menu was a very welcome touch. The room faced the terrace and trees rather than the valley, but the view was still pleasant and quiet. The spacious bathroom was attractive, with a large stone shower and carved shelving for amenities. Its layout was a little unconventional, but ventilation was good and there was no water spillage. Breakfast through room service was exceptional value: extensive, well prepared, and generous, with no hidden tray or service charges. It was one of the nicest hotel breakfasts I’ve had in some time.

The atmosphere was magnificent and calm, with stunning views from the restaurant and breakfast room. The hotel has spacious, well-equipped rooms, a superb bathroom, and friendly staff. They also leave a fresh bottle of water every day.

Sophia from Guest Relations made my birthday feel special with a lovely handwritten note. Katinka, the Reservations Manager, also took care of all our special requests with such attention. From booking through checkout, the whole team was warm and welcoming, and the hotel felt both luxurious and homey. We left with great memories and are already looking forward to coming back. Highly recommended!

The Terrace Restaurant was a real letdown. Staff were chatting among themselves instead of helping guests, and I saw a foreign family being overlooked while people who arrived later were served first. It was upsetting to witness. I’ve had good stays at several Steigenberger hotels around Germany, from Berlin to Munich, so this experience at the Steigenberger Hotel in Königswinter was especially disappointing. If management doesn’t deal with this behavior, it feels like they’re encouraging it.
