Hotel Meyer - Alter Bergischer Gasthof

Clean and comfortable, with great people. Highly recommended.

March 9, 2024. I've lived here since December 2021 because I haven't found a new apartment yet. I absolutely cannot recommend staying at Hotel Meyer. The one star is for the beautiful nature around it. There are power outages without explanation, sometimes several times a day, especially in winter. In freezing weather, the room is only 16 degrees Celsius, so a radiator is essential. Hot shower water is available only between 6 and 8 a.m., and sometimes there is no hot water at all. The B 506 is only ten meters from the windows, and the deafening noise from motorcycles and sports cars using it as a racetrack in summer is awful. There are also problems in neighboring rooms: rain leaks through one ceiling, another had no heating for weeks, and the stove in another can't be used because the fuse trips when it's turned on. Complaints about the stove issue haven't resolved it. The hallway, stairwell, and laundry room can go weeks without cleaning. There's a frequent, pervasive smell of laundry detergent throughout the building. In winter, when it's freezing, mice or rats run behind the wood paneling and across the ceiling, making it hard to sleep at night. The way legitimate complaints from hotel guests are handled shows a lack of social skills. My security deposit was not fully refunded, and no explanation was given.

We couldn't eat there that day, but the bus connection into town was quite good. The room was cozy, and anyone who likes the old Bergisches Land style will feel right at home. The hostess was truly lovely and went out of her way to help.

The bed and bathroom were very well maintained and clean, and the hotel has a great breakfast, a lovely restaurant, and very friendly staff. I can definitely recommend Hotel Meyer if you book a nice double room. It's idyllic, and the double rooms look nicely renovated. I advise against a single room, though. According to the website, there are two available, and mine had an old gray carpet with several unidentifiable stains, unlike the double rooms. Cobwebs in the corners and incredibly old furniture didn't improve the room. (Pictures attached)
