Hotel Residenz Joop

We were there about 14 years ago, and we still talk about the experience. Hotel Residenz Joop has become our benchmark for hotel quality. The atmosphere, the beds and rooms, and especially the breakfast were all top of the bill. We'll meet once again!

I stayed here in September 2017. The hotel is elegant, and the room was lovely and stylish. Breakfast fit the hotel's style too. At checkout I met the owner, who was very friendly, and we had a long chat. The main downside was the internet speed. I measured just 6 kb/s, so I couldn't really do anything online. Parking is mostly on the street, as the hotel has only a few spaces.

We stayed for three days in June 2013, then added two more because of the gracious service and convenient location. It was the best stay of our two weeks in Germany.

My warning is about Residenz Joop and the €721 bill they sent me two weeks after a one-night stay. I had smoked in the room with the windows open, though it was cold, and used a glass as an ashtray because I couldn't find one. I left early the next morning, around 6 a.m. They said the smoking meant they couldn't rent the room for several days and charged me for the damage and lost bookings. I was already unsettled by Magdeburg: the taxi driver from the train station talked about the DDR, unemployment and poverty, and we had a serious incident while trying to get boiled eggs at a restaurant. I feel for people living there, but charging a visitor €721 over this seems unreal. They sent the letter to my legal address in Alkmaar. A lawyer pursuing me in the Netherlands could cost them more than that before the case even reached a Dutch court. I can't recommend spending money with people who handle things this way. The hotel manager calls himself Bernd Joop.
