Hotel Am Bismarck

I booked this because I was stranded near the central train station, just four minutes away. I didn’t get breakfast, and only stayed overnight, so the very old interior didn’t matter much to me. The room was clean, could be locked, and was cool but not cold. I could have turned the heat up, and with energy prices as they are, the temperature was understandable. The staff were friendly when I arrived, and the front desk was friendly again in the morning when I reported the problem, wrote it down, and said they’d make amends next time. The issue was the toilet water running constantly, with a sound like a dripping, half-open tap that carried through the closed bathroom door. I noticed after getting into bed and was too tired to go back and complain. Even after a 14-hour flight and DB delays, getting to bed past midnight, I was exhausted but still had trouble sleeping. For me, that room shouldn’t have been handed over with its keys. In my view, a one-star room in Germany should at least be clean, feel safe, be warm enough, and be quiet enough to sleep. This met the first three, but not the last. The location was convenient, but based on this room I’d suggest staying somewhere else. Other rooms may have been better and could have earned three stars.

The location was my main concern on a business trip, and it’s only five minutes from the train station. The downside was the street noise, so in summer I had to shut the windows and turn on the AC to sleep. The staff were great and available anytime. Rooms were tidy and very clean, though the furniture and decor were modest. I rated the rooms four stars because the internet was slow and completely unstable. Breakfast was average, but fine.

I was here for six days for a conference after arriving by train from the UK. The location is ideal, the accommodation was clean and comfortable, and it was good value. Every staff member was exceptionally helpful and friendly. But the WiFi was terrible and nearly drove me crazy. It felt like going back about 15 years. In 2022, low-powered, intermittent WiFi just isn’t acceptable. I hope the owners take this seriously, because for me it spoiled what otherwise would have been an excellent hotel.

We were five people, and the service was excellent. The front desk staff were always happy to help and answer questions, which gave the place a very warm feel. The hotel is well located near the center and wasn’t expensive. Breakfast was good, the rooms were comfortable, and everything was clean. There’s an elevator, and public parking is available nearby.
