Fronveste Das Alte Knasthaus

For a night or two, this was a nice enough stay: the rooms were clean and the owner very polite. It’s a modest hotel, though, with fairly small rooms and rather limited breakfast. The furniture feels oddly chosen and not very useful, especially the closet. Any longer and the stay gets exhausting.

We hadn’t realized we’d booked this hotel during a major city event. Security wouldn’t let us into the hotel car park, and when we called the hotel, they just advised us to park somewhere else. Every lot we tried was full. After driving around several times, we had to leave our van unattended in a supermarket parking lot. By the time we walked through town to the hotel, it was locked and dark. Other guests facing the same problem joined us. We called the hotel number, and eventually the manager came and gave us our rooms. The festivities were incredibly loud until 3 a.m., with a DJ playing right behind the hotel. The room was hot, but opening the window wasn’t an option because of the music, so I got no sleep. The next morning we decided to leave, since the chaos would continue during our stay. The manager wanted full payment for the next night, saying he wasn’t required to tell us about the noise and access issues and couldn’t relet the rooms at short notice. After we argued, he agreed to a reduced fee. We found a nice hotel outside the city, which saved our trip. The place might be fine outside party season, but the manager’s attitude means we’ll never return. I can’t recommend it.

The food was decent, but I didn’t feel very welcome. The staff seemed to be socializing with their own friends and with hotel staff who had just finished their shifts.

Good rooms in the “prison” hotel section, lovely location and view, tasty food, and fair prices. I’d recommend the whole package.
