The €850 deposit is still being withheld over a small spill of candle wax. The owner said it would take a full repaint of the doors and window frames, and our efforts to sort this out went nowhere. We were a large group of friends who paid a lot for a weekend away and expected to be treated fairly. We travel together every year and thought Gutshaus Gross Helle might become a place we returned to, but this left us frustrated and feeling cheated. We won't book again, and I'd tell others to think twice if unexpected charges and an unfair host are a concern.

The countryside setting is great for unwinding, and the renovated old house has nice apartments. The whirlpool and sauna are included, which is a plus. My only gripe was the curtains let some light through, so I was up early.

We felt very well looked after by Mr. Schubert from the manor house, and the apartment was clean and tidy. The location worked perfectly for us, though it may feel too remote for some. From here it's easy to reach Waren on Lake Müritz in 45 minutes, or the Baltic Sea at Wieck in an hour. The spa is good but costs extra, and you can also rent bicycles and use Wi-Fi. There isn't anywhere to eat on site, so you'll need to drive. The nearest restaurant is in Laptitz, about 10 minutes away, with good traditional German food; there are more options in Neubrandenburg and around Lake Tollensesee.
