Explorer Hotel Neuschwanstein

The location is actually nice and the staff were kind, but my room wasn't cleaned once during the week I stayed. Breakfast was horrible, with literally nothing to eat unless you made your own eggs. The food in general wasn't great either.

We paid €120 for one night and checked in at 5:30. Most hotels let you check out at noon, but here we were told to leave by 10:30. We had no choice but to pay another €30 to keep the room until 6 in the evening, since we couldn't just leave suddenly. At 5:40, twenty minutes before checkout, we went to the shared balcony and the automatic key card wouldn't let us back in. We were stuck outside and had to go to reception half dressed to get the card access restored. What kind of behavior is that from a supposedly high-end hotel? The spa is only available for two hours a day and closes at 7 in the evening. When I asked about the sauna and steam room, one staff member said 3, another said 5 PM, and I had to walk all the way to reception to ask them to open it again. What's the point of these amenities if they can't keep a basic hotel facility working? This was one of the worst hotel experiences I've had, especially with the unclear timings and the key card cutting off early. I'm sure they'll reply to my review with an apology, but that won't change what happened, and I won't get a refund from this overpriced, average place.

For €604 for five nights, the room rate in my group booking was far too high. I could have booked it cheaper myself, and what the hotel offered didn't come close to justifying the cost. The room had no desk or even a chair. Breakfast was tasty in general, but if you wanted fried, scrambled, or boiled eggs, you had to make them yourself. I've never seen such poor hotel service; it felt like they were just trying to save staff and money. There was no lunch available, so you had to walk down to the village and back up, which isn't practical in a normal lunch break. You end up hungry at an expensive hotel, and there weren't enough staff at breakfast or reception. Getting there was just as frustrating. I arrived at Nesselwang train station at 9:15 p.m. with 40 kg of baggage. There's no hotel shuttle. They gave me a taxi company's number, but no one answered when I called, so I had to lug everything for 40 minutes up a very steep, rough path. My suitcase wheels broke. The hotel presents itself as green and eco-friendly, but arriving by public transport leaves you stranded. This was the worst value for money I've experienced in Germany, with very high prices and poor service. I'd never come back.

With all the mosquitoes, we couldn't open the window, so we had warm, sleepless nights. That was especially rough for our dog, who cost an extra €20 per night. The pillows were so small they disappeared under your head, and the bathroom constantly smelled of sewage. After a hike, I wanted a coffee and they charged €4.70 for a machine-made one that I had to make myself. Ridiculous. Definitely not coming back.
