Alpenhotel Oberstdorf – ein Rovell Hotel

I’d give it 3/5. The hotel is in a nice spot with good views of the mountains, and there are plenty of paths around the grounds where you can enjoy the scenery from different places. The cats wandering around were all friendly and made the stay more enjoyable. There were often free parking spaces, and it’s a quick drive into town. There’s also a Rewe supermarket nearby. One thing that wasn’t clear on the hotel website is that it has several buildings, so we initially had trouble finding ours until someone from staff helped us. Our room was comfortable and had drinks like juice, water and beer, but they cost extra. We were there during a warm spell, and without AC the room became like a sauna unless we opened the windows. The restaurant also had no AC, and unlike the room, it was hot in there all the time. The food was quite tasty, and there was a wide selection at breakfast and dinner. The service, though, was very poor. Once we waited 40 minutes just to place our order. I didn’t use the pools, SPA or other facilities, so I can’t say much about them, but having them available could make a stay better.

The location suited me well, a little outside Oberstdorf and away from the touristy spots. I stayed two nights. The room was large and clean, and the food was good, though I was disappointed that it was buffet style. We had a nice stay, but I wouldn’t return. Our shower wasn’t working properly, and it took two requests to the front desk before anyone dealt with it. The hotel is also very large, while the sauna area is tiny for that many guests.

Just outside town, among the forests, the location is very good. Our room was spacious and clean, and the beds were comfortable, but we were at the back of the main building with no balcony or view. The staff were friendly, though it took two requests to get the shower fixed. A few people speak English, but not many, so be ready to use your German. The spa is nice, but much too small for the number of guests. When we were there it was full of noisy kids, so it wasn’t very relaxing. The food was delicious, but the buffet had limited options. From the booking description, I expected a served meal. Free Wi-Fi was also really poor. I could barely stay connected long enough to read emails, though the hotel was packed, which probably didn’t help.

The service was fantastic and friendly, and the room was incredible. I was lucky enough to get one of the three best rooms in the whole place. Just a heads-up for anyone with limited mobility, there are a few flights of stairs you can’t avoid.
