Bergruh

Bergruh is a lovely hotel in a great location, though that final uphill kilometer from the bus stop can be miserable in blazing sun. The staff were incredibly friendly and always used 'du/dich' and 'ihr/euch' instead of 'Sie/Ihr'. They handled the corona rules beautifully: clear shifts for dinner and breakfast, a buffet repacked into neat, untouched portions to take to the table, masks throughout, and sanitizer everywhere. At other times they could be a bit pleasantly disorganized. Orders sometimes got forgotten or misunderstood, and people seemed too polite to ask what you meant. The rooms were too warm and stuffy, not super clean though not bad, and the fridge was nearly useless. Things might have been different in corona-times. Overall, I'd give it 4/5. The biggest issue for us was the food. They advertise that they cater to vegetarians, but they really don't seem to understand vegetarianism, and I wonder what it's like for vegans. There's always a vegetarian and a fish option alongside two meat dishes, but the vegetarian meals get repetitive and boring, and the meat dishes usually don't have a vegetarian adaptation. If a meat appetizer was replaced, it was often just a dull salad. When we suggested cheese, one salad came with three huge blocks of it, which was hilarious. They served a beef soup with a Maultasche, a Bavarian filled pasta, and gave us vegetable bouillon instead, but the Maultasche still had beef. Breakfast wasn't great for vegetarians either, and they don't give extra cheese. From what I could tell, a vegan breakfast would be dry bread, fruit, and orange juice. They really need to get their heads around vegetarianism, never mind veganism. Then it'd be awesome!

We spent a week here and loved it, though I wish we'd had longer. The food was excellent, and the rooms were very clean. The people working here felt like real people, friendly in a genuine way, not fake-friendly.

The rooms and location are beautiful. We had half board, but I wouldn't recommend the evening meal. Breakfast outside was lovely!

Loved our stay here. The food, staff, amenities, and location were all excellent. We'll be back.
