Gasthaus Blume

This was years ago, but I still remember it as one of the worst travel experiences I’ve had. I’m American and was living in Germany then. My father was visiting for the first time, and my German boyfriend had secretly planned to propose the next morning with my dad there. It was supposed to be a joyful, unforgettable moment. We’d booked just one night as a stop on the way to France the next morning, and had reserved a room with two beds. We were given one instead. When we politely asked about the mistake, the staff got aggressive and threatened to call the police unless we paid the nightly rate right away. My father, who has darker skin, was with us, and the staff made an offensive, inappropriate assumption that we were all sharing one bed. Their reaction felt clearly rooted in prejudice. We felt unsafe and unwelcome, so we paid the full rate to avoid more conflict and left that same night, exhausted, to drive home. What should have been a simple overnight stop and the beginning of a meaningful family weekend became deeply upsetting and frightening. I still think about how wrong it was. No guest should be treated that way. This hotel urgently needs training in cultural sensitivity, anti-discrimination, and basic respect for travelers.
