Alpenhotel Ohlstadt

The owners, a couple who seem to run nearly the whole place themselves, were especially friendly and attentive to guests. Breakfast was fresh and generous every day, and our room was a good size with modern furnishings for a hotel of this standard. The hotel is conveniently situated but set back from the main road, so it was fairly quiet. There are lots of things to do in the large building: a certified bowling alley, billiards room, a green space behind the hotel, a pool with mountain views, sauna, solarium, and sun terrace. Some of the decor feels dated, and a few areas were literally dusty. Still, I'd recommend it, and it felt well worth the price for our two-day break.

Our room was small, though it was clean and looked after. The bigger problem was cigarette smoke from people on the ground floor drifting straight up to us. I found the hotel manager's welcome rather cool, and the building is showing its age. The breakfast room has fabric and plastic flowers, which might suit some people. When I was asked about scrambled eggs, I specifically requested a fried egg instead and was told that wasn't possible. What a shame. I can't see how frying one takes more effort.

I raised my concerns when we left after the second night, but was told I should have asked for another room after the first night. I couldn't find any staff to speak to between 8:00 and 9:30 a.m. that morning, though, and the conversation turned into a pointless argument. For €104 a night for two people with breakfast, our room was extremely cramped. It had a tiny balcony and bathroom, a musty smell, a loose toilet seat, yellow curtains that wouldn't darken the room, plastic toothbrush cups, and noisy pool pumps, along with other issues that seemed easy to avoid. The coffee pots were already on the breakfast tables hours beforehand, so there was no fresh coffee, although the buffet itself was okay. Despite being advertised as a hotel, it felt more like an old, basic guesthouse.

There are several restaurants nearby that you can walk to, and prices are reasonable. The hotel is cozy and the rooms are clean, but the top-floor ones get very hot in summer. They have skylights instead of balconies, so there's no view, and they aren't soundproof, which makes them a poor fit for anyone sensitive to noise.
