Gaestehaus Zoschke

The island of Rügen was beautiful, and that’s the one star I can give this stay. At Guesthouse Zoschke in Baabe, the ground-floor apartment was small and dark. There are two apartments, and the booking photos I saw showed the larger one. Maybe there was a misunderstanding, maybe not, but I wanted to make people aware. If you want privacy from the landlady or neighbors, you can move the window screens aside for a closer view. We felt unwelcome as soon as we arrived. No one showed us around, and getting to the accommodation meant walking past the landlady’s windows through a shared courtyard. That felt overly close, especially when our encounters with her were cold and unfriendly. We understood the request to avoid personal contact because of Covid, but even our two phone calls seemed to be treated as intrusive. A clothes rack was listed as available, but there wasn’t one, so we found another way to manage. The fireplace was also listed as available. We used it because the nights were chilly and the central heating barely worked. One night the landlady came in loudly and insulted us, saying things like there were bats in the chimney, the chimney sweep hadn’t approved it, we could get carbon monoxide poisoning, she was always having trouble with tenants, and she’d throw us out. We apologized several times, though I felt she should have apologized to us. There had been no written or spoken instructions saying not to use the fireplace or that it could only be used under certain conditions. If I’d known what was ahead, I never would have booked here. It seriously spoiled our vacation. Not recommended.

We had a lovely week there and felt right at home. The place was comfortably furnished and had everything we needed. We’d happily book it again.

We were happy with our stays every time. It felt a lot like having our own apartment.
