Ferienhaus Peggy

The apartment was clean, affordable, and had the basics for a holiday. Its position on the edge of town, near the forest and nature, was a plus, as was the morning bread delivery, though it felt a bit pricey. From the parking area behind the complex, you can see the mountain and Oybin monastery. The complex itself is showing its age, and the staircase needs repair. Noise from the neighboring construction yard was another downside. The built-in bed was especially awkward for us as seniors: it was high, and we could only climb in from the foot end. The low price was a positive.

The Wi-Fi and TV both worked perfectly, but that was about all I liked. The ground-floor apartment felt gloomy, with a very tall hedge blocking the terrace view from the window. The grounds looked neglected and the pedestrian path had no lighting. Inside, the furnishings didn’t go together, and all the carpets, rugs, and mats made the uncomfortable feel worse. There was no natural light in the kitchen; beside the fridge sat a cobweb-covered bottle of insect repellent, and I found food in the cupboard that had expired in 2020. The bathroom had just two small skylights, and I couldn’t open them.

Dogs are welcome, which is a big plus. The apartment was very clean and furnished in a practical, pleasant way, and the landlord was really friendly. The location made it easy to get around on foot. I’d happily book it again.

Getting the key at HOLZWERK Oybin was straightforward, and the first night seemed fine. The apartment looked newly renovated, and there was a nice play area for children. By the second evening, though, ants were everywhere (photos). When I raised it, the landlord made fun of me and asked whether he should call an exterminator on Sunday. My wife was six months pregnant and our son was two, so I asked for another option. He offered a different apartment, but it was much too small for three people and hadn’t been fully renovated. We turned it down and asked for another solution. The landlord then became rude and aggressive and told us to find somewhere else. I know the area and had contacts, so I found new accommodation myself; we were there less than 15 minutes later. The trouble continued after we left. That evening the landlord wouldn’t hand over the keys, saying he was off duty and wanted us to contact him the next day. A day later, I reached him at HOLZWERK Oybin. He charged 97 euros, although the booking agency had quoted 59 euros. I paid, but he refused to give me a receipt until I threatened to call the police. He also wanted us to pay for a “pre-cleaning,” which I’d never heard of. Usually there’s a final cleaning charge, but he couldn’t charge that because of the ants, so he called it something else. Comparing the visitor’s card with the one from our new accommodation, I found that the landlord had removed all the Oybin vouchers, which I could show in a photo. I forwarded the evidence to the local council and the Oybin spa administration. If the landlord had responded less rudely, I think we could have found a solution. We’re here on holiday in a beautiful place and don’t want stress, so I’d avoid the Peggy holiday apartment and Holzwerk Oybin.
