Ascot Hotel

For a one-night stay, this place is easy to recommend. It was really clean, with a big bathroom, and the minibar was actually free, including a beer and lots of soda. Breakfast was great for 5€ :)

The breakfast buffet was a real highlight: fresh food, lots of choice, and even a fresh squeezed orange juice machine. The restaurant food was excellent too, though there's no lunch or dinner service at the hotel. A couple of good restaurants are an easy walk away. I was here on a business trip and found the room clean and fairly large by European standards, if a bit basic. The big TV had just one English channel, and the settings were locked, so I couldn't turn on subtitles. The bare hallway floors also let a lot of noise through the room doors. Staff were polite and helpful, but there's no evening service, so arriving late means calling a number for help. It's away from downtown, so you'll need to drive or take taxis to most places. The room seemed reasonably priced to me, though value depends on what you pay when booking. For touring the Cologne area, Remscheid is 1h15m away by train, and hotels here can cost 1/3 of a stay in Cologne itself.

The rooms are kept in good shape, and breakfast is excellent value. Staff were friendly and helpful, even when I called ahead to ask about pets and electric car charging. Recommended.

We stayed five nights in Remscheid while visiting family after coming from France. The staff were friendly, but the room service was very poor. We only got fresh towels after asking. The coffee capsules weren't replaced, bins weren't emptied, and the beds weren't refreshed. It might be fine for a very short stay, but not for two nights or more...
