On the first day, I showered and unfolded a towel that was supposed to be clean. It had a sh*t stain, and I could smell it too. I was completely shocked. With the hotel’s “NO CLEAN = GREEN” slogan, I should have expected the worst, though I’m not sure they understand it anyway. After I complained, nobody from management got in touch. No explanation, no apology, no customer care, no contact at all. It was an extremely dirty experience.

The rooms are furnished well, but the bathroom and toilet smelled bad, and there was a terrible smell when I stepped out of the lift into the hall. The building looked very dirty from outside. Most of the guests seemed to be street workers or other workers in dirty clothes, and the hotel was almost full of them. Breakfast was very poor, just bread, butter, jam, and a few slices of ham. You have to cut the scrambled eggs. Honestly, I’d rate this as a workers’ hostel, not a four-star hotel.

The room amenities for sport are a good idea, and there was a good choice at breakfast. But it was very hot, and there’s no air conditioning. I had to open the windows all the way, which was awful because of the traffic noise and all the insects, including big moths, that came in. A hotel like this should have air conditioning.

Room service was good, and I have no complaints there. The brewery was pleasant too, with good service, a nice atmosphere, and good drinks. The food was good, Sky TV was a bonus and set up well, though the wine selection could be better and I’d have liked an English menu. The vending machine was poorly stocked, with no still water or better snacks. The room itself was generally okay, but the beds move around too easily and need something like rubber on the legs. A cooler or fridge minibar would be better than beer cans in a cupboard, which feels tacky. At reception, staffing was poor. The staff were generally pleasant, but seemed poorly trained, with little urgency or customer focus. The front desk should always be staffed, or at least have someone in the office behind it after hours. All front-of-house staff need better training and standards, including a standard uniform. The hotel is quite good in many ways, but these issues make it feel more like a motel or hostel. That overall experience has me looking at alternatives for the long run, in places such as Wuppertal, where the hotels seem more like hotels than hostels.

The brau had a lovely atmosphere, with attentive, pretty waitresses, plentiful food, and great beer. The value was among the best I’ve experienced in 13 years of regular travel. As a foreigner visiting a friend, I found this hotel perfect. I loved my room and the amazing view, though I would have liked a bar fridge. If I return to Remscheid, I won’t stay anywhere else!
