The spa is still beautiful, but on three of the five afternoons we went, there were no towels, and about half the surfaces had cups and glasses left on them. Breakfast was also a letdown, with roughly a third less available than we remembered. It was hard to find the breakfast staff when we needed something. The patio was open only once during our five-night stay. It was shut one day because it was cold, and another after the rain had stopped, so the furniture could have been dried off. We used to sit out there with the heaters and watch the deer. We’ve stayed here several times over the years, and it used to be our favorite place to visit. This time, the staff rarely greeted us coming or going and didn’t seem to care whether we were there. I wonder if they’re understaffed, but they don’t seem very interested in making changes. I doubt we’ll come back, and I wouldn’t recommend it now. Our old review was very different: the service and atmosphere from check-in to check-out were incredible. Everyone at the concierge desk and restaurant was fantastic, the views from so many spots were hard to beat, and the sauna was the most incredible I’d ever been in.

The hotel is beautiful, very clean, and thoughtfully laid out, with lovely surroundings. We also enjoyed the wellness area and food service. Still, for an expensive five-star hotel, I expected a bit more. The sauna and wellness area are only available from 12 to 20, and I’m not sure why. The front desk gave us confusing information about the wellness area and room card. The TV offered an internet connection option, but it didn’t work in our room.

The staff were professional, and our host was especially warm and welcoming. We had a spacious, newly updated room that was clean and really comfortable, with wonderfully puffy pillows. The location is amazing, in an old castle overlooking the hill. Breakfast was excellent, with fresh fruit and plenty of choice. If you want to treat yourself, dinner at the restaurant here is worth it, though it’s highly priced. The chef is exquisite.

The food was a highlight. We had the four-course fish menu and loved it. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a hotel stay this much. It’s a small hotel, with around 40 rooms, but everything felt perfect. The rooms are large and nicely decorated, the staff are very friendly, and the pool and wellness area are great.
