Landgasthof Rebstock

We came across the restaurant by chance, just a short hop from the Rheinburgenweg trail, and had one of the best meals of our walking holiday along the Rhein. The schnitzel was great, the spätzle tasted fresh, and there were seasonal specials too. We also tried a lovely rich Riesling lieblich with just the right balance of acidity and sweetness.

The worst part was being locked in after the owners left. At 6:30 in the morning I had to get out by jumping from a window, about a 2m drop. Leave aside the fire code violation, this is the kind of thing that can ruin your day. I was late and got in trouble with my supervisor. The rooms are old and tiny, there’s no parking next to the hotel, and there’s no cellphone reception. The wifi worked only about 25% of the time and was painfully slow. Even the pillows and comforter changed size and type from day to day, so you never knew what you’d be sleeping with. At least the old interior didn’t smell. That’s about the only good thing I can say.

The restaurant food was tasty and the service was nice. The place itself was pleasant, though it felt rather expensive for the standard.

The hotel was well kept and very clean. Breakfast was nice, and the service was excellent.
