Strandhotel Sassnitz

We came in November, when things were fairly quiet, and had a great stay. Our room looked straight out to sea, in the last building before the water. Breakfast was great, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. We'd love to come back.

Lunch the day before was nearly perfect, and I would have given it five stars. The fish market food was delicious this time too, but the service let us down. A high chair was only brought on request, and with a toddler along, we still weren't served until the waitress had walked by us countless times, seemingly sure we wouldn't bother her. That typical Nordic friendliness isn't for everyone, so sadly it's three stars.

Finding a substantial vegan breakfast in Germany can be difficult, but Strandhotel Sassnitz served us homemade rolls, several vegan spreads, fresh fruit, soy yogurt, muesli, homemade jam, and plant-based milks for coffee. They even brought out a delicious avocado-based birthday cake. The family running the hotel were friendly and helpful, and the new rooms were spacious, clean, and nicely furnished. It's right on the Baltic Sea coast. We couldn't try the restaurant because there was no chef available out of season, which was a shame. If you want to be near the chalk cliffs and enjoy a great vegan breakfast with a beautiful sea view, this is a good spot.

Everything is homemade here, from the cakes and cookies to the dinners and some specialty drinks. The place is unique in Sassnitz and on Rügen, and now focuses on vegetarian food. I keep coming back for its spot right by the old town and harbor promenade. If you stop for coffee and cake, don't miss the butter cookies. In summer, the lemonade with Japanese crystal seaweed is especially refreshing and really delicious.
