Gut Kattenhöhlen

We felt right at home, and our dog did too. The converted cowshed bathroom is especially spacious and has a bathtub. The apartment is roomy, the beds are comfortable, and the kitchen is fully equipped, including a capsule coffee machine. Contact with the owners was sporadic.

The Redderberg family were very helpful, and the apartments were spotless and nicely furnished. It’s peaceful there, and the beach is about a 20-minute walk away. The place is well equipped too.

The dog beach at Scharbeutz was a highlight for us, with clear water and no algae. It’s about 1.3 km away, roughly a 20-minute walk along the forest path. From the apartment at Gut Kattenhöhlen, walking trails start right outside, and Google Maps made many of them easy to follow. The estate is tucked into the quiet Kellerwald forest, and the Frieda apartment felt like a real home for our stay. It was clean, stylish and very well equipped, with plenty of dishes and cutlery, dishwasher tablets, fresh tea towels, and the bed linen we’d booked already in the bedroom. It matched the online description, and may even have been better. We got a personal, warm welcome from our hostess, even though contactless check-in is available. That set a very friendly tone. There was plenty of space for dogs on the estate, plus a small fenced run, a dog bed and bowls we could add at no charge, and even dog bathrobes. We also enjoyed the garden seating and the idyllic barrel sauna. Sauna towels were provided as promised. For getting around, the nearby Kattenhöhlener Weg stop has buses towards Timmendorfer Strand and Neustadt, while Wolfsschlucht is useful for Travemünde. We also liked the beach at Haffkrug and the cliffs near Brodten. The ferry to the Priwall nature reserve was free with the D-ticket, including for our dog. On the bus, a child’s ticket was enough for the dog, for example €2.50 to Travemünde. We planned some great walks with the Baltic Sea Guide. The route around the five lakes between Bad Malente and Plön was unforgettable, as were the lentil soup at Petersen's butcher shop and the QR-code audio guide at Plön's castle hill. Shopping in Scharbeutz was easy, with Rewe and its drinks section, Penny, and Aldi, which is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. We bought herring and other treats several times from Thiele Delicatessen, whose mobile van is at the Rewe supermarket every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. A peaceful, thoughtful place for people and dogs alike. We’re grateful to our hosts and will be back.

We spent a wonderful week here and were very happy with the apartment. It was lovely and had everything we needed. The beach is an easy walk through the nearby forest, and there’s a lot on the farm itself: a private courtyard playground, sauna area, fenced dog run, washing machine, dryer and ironing board. They even have bathrobes for dogs. The owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. Thanks to the whole team, we felt very comfortable and will definitely return. I highly recommend Gut Kattenhöhlen.
