We didn’t eat at the restaurant, so I can’t comment on the breakfasts or dinners. The room we rented in the house beside the hotel, 'Wohnung 2', was clean and roomy enough for two, with a lovely view across this part of Schwarzwald. All the kitchen appliances worked. We had to ask for kitchen towels and a garbage bag when we arrived, but they brought them right away without any trouble. There were four large bathroom towels already. The location is just what we wanted: Schönenbach is a tiny village with four streets, no shops, and lots of trees and silence, away from the busy world. Larger villages with shops, restaurants, and sights aren’t too far. In summer there isn’t even a bus, so you definitely need a car. Sometimes the house’s Wi-Fi signal disappeared, probably because of all the evening users. When it worked, the speed was great, and Netflix was possible.

We had no trouble getting around on foot even though we arrived by train and had no transport of our own. The place was peaceful and isolated, just what we wanted for Christmas. We’d like to come back in spring or summer to see the area at another time of year.
