Pension Waldklause

The hosts were lovely, friendly, helpful, and chatty, while still leaving us to ourselves. After our 24-hour drive, we must have looked exhausted. The first morning she brought us a huge thermos of coffee and said we looked like we needed it. We had a wonderful time and hope we can visit again. We booked easily, and the price was more than reasonable for the area and the middle of holiday season. Our holiday flat was super clean, well equipped, and felt warm and homely, with thoughtful furniture, decorations, and little details. The bathroom was lovely, and the wraparound balcony had brilliant views. We enjoyed watching summer thunderstorms from it at night. Breakfast was great. I’d seen a complaint in the comments and was a bit worried, but it was lovely: fresh fruit salad or vegetables, bread rolls, plenty of butter, juice, yoghurt, muesli, jam, and more. It’s a small pension, so the buffet isn’t huge. We ate breakfast there twice. When I was unwell and didn’t want to pass anything on to other holidaymakers, we ordered breakfast rolls instead. It was so nice to wake up to fresh rolls waiting for us. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, plus a couple of supermarkets for stocking up when you have the flat. The location is great even without a car. Jennerbahn is about a 15-20 minute walk, and Malerwinkel is half an hour away. There’s e-mountain-bike hire at Jennerbahn and lots of hikes accessible right from the pension. The local bus is free with the Kurkarte. By car, most of the places we wanted to see were 5-15 minutes away, including Amselbach Klamm, Salt Mines, and Eagles Nest. It’s an easy hour’s drive to Austria to visit Burg Werfen, which Call of Duty gamers will know, and the Ice Caves.

We booked two nights starting May 8, 2021. On arrival, the heating wasn’t working, so we called the owner to let him know and asked for the Wi-Fi password, which seemed like a normal request. He replied rudely that he’d give it to us tomorrow, not then, because he was sleeping. The next day, he called and told us to pack and leave. As the photo shows, he threw our things outside. His reason was that coffee had accidentally spilled on the bed sheets, and he gave us no satisfactory explanation. They didn’t let us back inside, leaving us out in the cold night with nowhere to go. The man and woman kept shouting at us and saying bad things as they told us to leave. I’d never recommend this place.

The apartment was fully furnished and quite comfortable, with a large wraparound balcony. Parking was right beside the house, which sits on a beautiful hillside with panoramic views of the Berchtesgaden valley and mountains. The hosts were open, approachable, and very helpful. The bread roll service was excellent, and thanks again for the spelt bread. Full breakfast is also available. The mattresses didn’t seem old, but felt a bit too soft for us. The remote location also means public transport is very limited. The tourist information center said they were working on that issue. The hosts can’t be held responsible for it. We had a wonderful time!

We had a wonderful eight-day stay. It’s a peaceful place for resting, with attractions in and around Lake Königssee still within easy reach. Our room was spacious and comfortably furnished, and the hostess was incredibly kind and friendly, with lots of useful tips for our activities. Breakfast was small but delicious, with fresh, lovingly prepared additions each day. It was a fantastic vacation in a beautiful area, and we’d love to come back.
