The woods around the hotel are spectacular, with hiking options in every direction. It's also just 100 meters from the information point where the day trekking trails start. The setting is central but still quiet, and there's a natural-water pool in the park across from the hotel that's great for families with children. Schönwald sits at about 1,000 meters above sea level, so August days are warm without getting too hot and evenings are pleasantly cool. This Italian–German family-run place is tastefully decorated and has plenty of comforts, including a sauna, steam bath, and small indoor pool. The restaurant is a real strength, with an excellent, generous breakfast and a great dinner menu.

The restaurant food was amazing, Michelin star quality in our opinion, and the prices felt very reasonable for that quality. Our junior suite was lovely, with a large spotless bathroom and beautiful ornate fixtures. It had two entrances, and the back door opened onto a lovely terrace with a path down to the street and a small park, which made walking our dogs very convenient. The owners were wonderful, and the wifi was easy to connect to and worked very well.

The restaurant was superb, and I liked the little touches, like finding the room tidied while we were at breakfast and homemade cookies offered with afternoon tea. The stay felt cozy, welcoming, comfortable, and refined. The gym equipment was disappointing, but we'd love to come back.

We ended up having two desserts because they were so tasty. The dinner was wonderful, served in a beautiful setting, with great service. The food was excellent and well prepared, refined German cuisine, with local products and good meat and fish.

It's a beautifully decorated historic place, and the facilities are good. Still, it's out of the way, and the food is nice but the selection is limited. The staff are friendly enough to smile, but the service itself is missing that warmth.
